On question 1, yes, just make sure the entry in config.in corresponds to the 
entry in the users directory Makefile.

I had many problems putting any more atheros stuff into the kernel.  I ended 
up ripping the madwifi from the kernel and adding a new version under the 
modules directory.  It took a little bit of massaging, but I did get it 
done.
