Joel,

I have put my own kernel modules into snapgear just modifying Makefiles and Kconfig. Also, I guess that snapgear needs openssl library to support some  wpa_supplicant features and I am seeking  openssl library now.

I had many problems putting any more atheros stuff into the kernel.  I ended 
up ripping the madwifi from the kernel and adding a new version under the 
modules directory.  It took a little bit of massaging, but I did get it 
done.
