I am currently using madwifi svn version 1891 and hostapd 0.5.6.  I was 
having kernel oops problems when WPA was turned on until I tried the 
patches attached to http://madwifi.org/ticket/914,
http://madwifi.org/attachment/ticket/914/phydisable.2.diff and 
http://madwifi.org/attachment/ticket/914/wds-fixes.2.diff . 
http://madwifi.org/ticket/755 may also be related.
