Try hostapd 0.5.6.  That fixed problems I had with WPA.  See 
http://madwifi.org/ticket/755 .  Also, make sure you are using a more 
recent madwifi then included in the gateworks distro.  We are currently 
using madwifi svn version 2174.  We also have the patches included in 
http://madwifi.org/ticket/914, wds-fixes.2.diff and phydisable.2.diff .
